Hello, and welcome to this week's NWL WEEKLY Newsletter. If you're looking for all the latest news pertaining to the National Wrestling League, HOUSE of PAIN Wrestling Federation and the Superior Pro Wrestling Training Center, you've come to the right place! Last Saturday, August 9, 2008, the HoPWF was back in action at the historic Apollo Civic Theater in Martinsburg, WV. It was another exciting evening of professional wrestling action on the big stage in the Apollo, and I would like to thank the theater staff and our fans for their continued support.
Our next scheduled event at the Allstar Karate & Kickboxing Gym in Chambersburg, PA, on Saturday, August 23, 2008, has been postponed due to the karate school changing location and in the process of moving. Keep an eye on the website and newsletter for our next event in Chambersburg, PA.
NWL President Dick Caricofe and HoPWF President John Rambo are bringing the fans an extra special evening of professional wrestling action at the historic Apollo Civic Theater in Martinsburg, WV, on Saturday, 9-6-08. Signed for this are former WWE & ECW superstar and OVW trainer Al Snow, WWE Hall of Fame superstar Tito Santana, Doink the Clown, John Rambo and all the stars of the NWL/HoPWF. Stage seats for this event are $20.00, balcony seats are $15.00 and general admission seats are $10.00. Tickets can be reserved today and paid for the day of the event. There will also be a training seminar with Al Snow prior to the event, at the NWL's Superior Pro Wrestling Training Center/HOUSE of PAIN beginning at 1:00PM. This seminar will be open to anyone involved in professional wrestling and the cost is $50.00 per person. A special "Meet & Greet" autograph session will take place after the seminar and that will start at approximately 3:00PM. For further information about the show, seminar, meet & greet or ticket reservations call 301-739-3048 or 301-797-0627. Email inquiries can be sent to HqNWL@aol.com or JRamboNWL@aol.com.
We'll be returning to Jim McCoy's Troubadour Lounge & Park on Sunday, September 21, 2008, with another fundraising event. This will be an outdoor show and bell time is set for 2:00PM. More details about this show will be posted soon, so keep an eye on the weekly newsletter and our website calendar of events newsboard.
That wraps up this week's introduction to the NWL WEEKLY Newsletter, except for our history lesson. Before humans had a way of keeping time, no one paid much attention to the anniversary of important events, such as birthdays. Only when ancient peoples began taking notice of the moon's cycles, did they pay attention to the changing seasons and the pattern that repeated itself over and over. Eventually, the first calendars were formulated in order to mark time changes and other special days. From this tracking system came the ability to celebrate birthdays and other significant anniversaries the same day each year. Evidence of birthday observances dates back before the rise of Christianity. In pagan cultures, people feared evil spirits - especially on their birthdays. It was a common belief that evil spirits were more dangerous to a person when he or she experienced a change in their daily life, such as turning a year older. As a result, birthdays were merry occasions celebrated with family and friends, who surrounded the person of honor with laughter and joy in order to protect them from evil. Instead of gifts, most guests brought positive thoughts and happy wishes for the upcoming year. However, if well-wishers did bring gifts, it was considered an especially good influence for the birthday person. Although historians are certain that people have observed their birthdays for quite some time, there are few records of such celebrations that still exist. Of these few descriptions, only those birthdays of kings, high-ranking nobility, and other important figures have been documented. Common people and especially children never celebrated their birth when the idea came about. This trend has been explained by a theory that nobility were the only people wealthy enough to throw such celebrations, and quite possibly were the only ones deemed important enough to have been written about or remembered. Some historians believe these early birthday bashes resulted in the custom of wearing birthday "crowns" as time went on. The first children's birthday parties occurred in Germany and were called Kinderfeste. Eventually, birthday celebrations became a tradition around the world with young and old, rich or poor. Although birthday customs are quite similar in some countries today, not everyone celebrates in the same way. Different people have incorporated their own rituals into the birthday celebration, based on spiritual beliefs and ancient cultural traditions. While you may find some of them odd, or even humorous, each one is unique. Tomorrow, Saturday, August 16th, our very own Cathy Nichols will be celebrating her birthday here at the NWL/HOUSE of PAIN. That means gifts and a nice dinner on my tab this week! Happy Birthday, Cathy! And that's just from me, the others will have to tell you themselves. Thank you for being a fan of professional wrestling and the NWL/HoPWF!

~ NWL WEEKLY Newsletter Writer/Editor, John Rambo (Hi, Mom!)

The NWL/HoPWF's "Open Door" policy is offered to any worker in the business. Whether you're a trained professional wrestler, manager, referee, valet or trainee enrolled at an actual training center, the "Open Door" policy can help you chase your dreams. If you're looking to gain that much needed experience and exposure, the HoPWF weekly events are perfect for accomplishing that goal. Over the last three years, many workers have taken advantage of the "Open Door" policy and benefited from the decision. Not only do you get to brush up and improve your skills, but you also get a foot in the door to many other bookings on NWL shows and other league's events. You won't put any money in your pockets at the HoPWF events, but what knowledge and experience you pick up, money cannot buy! Opportunities like this don't come around often! There is only one condition with participating in any HoPWF event, and that is every wrestler must wear a pair of actual professional wrestling boots. No sneakers or treaded sole work boots are permitted on the HoP ring canvas. I guarantee a great time for anyone who joins in the action, and if you're interested, simply contact me at JRamboNWL@aol.com. Opportunities like this don't come around often!

Any professional wrestler is welcome to take part in the NWL/HoPWF's shootfighting division. To sign up for an HoPWF "shootfight" match, e-mail me at JRamboNWL@aol.com.

All HoPWF events held at the NWL training center are FREE ADMISSION events. There is no charge for parking or for admission to see all the wrestling action, which has been offered to the fans each Tuesday night, since April 1, 1997. If you're ever in the Hagerstown, MD area, stop by and check out the free professional wrestling entertainment. I guarantee everyone a fun time for the entire family!

Each week I rate every wrestler in each match and select the WRESTLER OF THE WEEK. There are 5 categories, with points handed out on a scale of 0 to 5 (Best possible score being 25 pts). The wrestler who gets the highest combined score is the "wrestler of the week." The 5 grading categories are as follows:
1. Attitude- Wrestlers will be graded on their overall attitude and respect for the business.
2. Skill- I will watch for proper technique, creativity, and safety.
3. Showmanship- Wrestlers will be graded on how well they interact with the fans. Good showmanship will get the fans into a match and get them making noise.
4. Sportsmanship- Wrestlers will be graded on how well they treat the other workers, both in and out of the ring. Respect is a key factor.
5. Match Execution- Wrestlers will be graded on how well they carry out their roles as "heel" or "face." Match psychology is also an important factor. This is not how well the wrestlers follow a script.

This week's "wrestler of the week" winner is Todd Hill for his performance at the 8-9-08 HoPWF Martinsburg, WV, event at the historic Apollo Civic Theater in Martinsburg, WV. Todd's scores are as follows:

1. Attitude 5
2. Skill 5 5
3. Showmanship 5
4. Sportsmanship 5
5. Match Execution 5
Total high score   25  pts - Perfect Score

The NWL/HOUSE of PAIN is always looking for help with the street team, ring crew and setting up chairs for events. Anyone who helps with the ring or chairs is required to report to the road show venues 3 hours prior to bell time or they can meet up at the SPWTC/HOUSE of PAIN in Hagerstown, MD, and travel to the shows with the ring crew. This is a good way for younger fans to get free admission into NWL/HoPWF road show events. If anyone is interested in any of the above openings, please contact John Rambo at JRamboNWL@aol.com.
